A Statement on Netflix’s Maternal Instinct from Baby Maybe

Baby Maybe featured in Netflix Maternal Instinct documentary

If you’ve watched Maternal Instinct – Netflix’s widely watched documentary recounting a horrific true-crime case – you saw our name and our website on screen. We want to set the record straight.

Baby Maybe had no knowledge of this crime and no role in it. As came out during the case, the person responsible had at some point purchased a product from our store – like any other customer, and with nothing to signal what she intended.

We make novelty products. Our products are gag gifts for surprise announcements and jokes between people who are all in on them. We do not support using them to deceive, defraud, or cause harm to anyone, and our Terms of Service and public disclaimers expressly prohibit harmful use.

We also want to be clear about proportion: there is an immense distance between a harmless prank and a deliberate act of unspeakable violence. One does not lead to the other. The responsibility for this crime lies entirely with the person who committed it, and we condemn it without reservation.

We won’t pretend to have words to express what this family endured. A young mother and her child were taken in a way that is almost impossible to comprehend, and our thoughts are with the people who loved them.
